Creating an Author Pitch

What is an Author Pitch and why make one?

If you love writing stories but aren't artistically inclined, or just want to write and let someone else draw, creating an Author Pitch is probably just what you need.
This will bring interested artists who want to collaborate to you.

We really want to base this on collaboration, and not compensation. Of course, if you're offering some form of payment to the artist that's fine as well, just know that should be between you and your artist.

Some things to keep in mind when working with an artist.
Treat your artists with respect, as they should you. A team is for collaboration, not to be used as resources. It takes a lot more time to draw a comic than it does to write one, so be respectful of their time, as they should yours. Take their skills and interests into account with your story if they state any limitations in their reply.

What should you include in an Author Pitch?

Title of the Topic: When you create your Artist Pitch you'll be creating a New Topic. Make sure it's something that's to the point and would grab your targeted artist's attention.

General Information: You wouldn't collaborate with a complete stranger would you? Introduce a little bit about yourself. Your penname, age, experience, have you collaborated with another artist before? How long have you been writing stories?

Hook: If you can summarize your story in one to two convincing sentences, then really your set. Take this chance to show just how unique your story is and what makes it stand out from the rest.

Genre/Elevator Pitch: What genre(s) does our story fall under? What is it about? Give us your elevator pitch. WHO is this story about? WHAT is the situation? WHERE does the story take place? WHY does it matter?
Of course, you can hold out on the spoiler details if you'd like and elaborate more when you find an artist that is interested. But no one wants to jump on a half working train without knowing, so make sure they know you know what you want and what you're talking about.

Characters: This is also something you can save for after you find an artist, but if you don't mind sharing then include your story characters. What they like, their goals, motivations, characteristics. Nothing gets an artist motivated like imagining the characters they'll be drawing.

Participation: How will you be delegating the work? Will the artist have the opportunity to help with the story, will you be helping with the art? Will you be working with more than one artist, and are there more than one author? How long do you think the project will take?

Remember, keep it short and sweet!
Please keep in mind that this is just to give you inspiration on what you can include. All of the above is not necessary when creating a pitch, as long as you can get you intended idea across it doesn't matter how much or how little you write. Take what resonates and go from there.

As the Forum grows I'll continue to edit and add examples of good Author Pitches I find to the post below.
